The Czech and Slovak Republics are rich in folk music and dance. The dances in this video and book convey various regional styles, based on field work by the late Prof. František Bonuš of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
The material is directed to public and private school teachers and college faculty who wish to increase the diversity of their offerings in classes and performances; to leaders of youth and adult folk-dance groups, classes, and camps; and to those who simply want to enjoy the beauty of the music and dances.
The dances in the books are organized into three volumes: beginning dances for children ages 5-13 and beginning adults, intermediate dances for ages 14-16 and adults, and advanced dances for ages 17 and up. The volume of beginning dances has also been published separately.
The movements and styles of the dances are demonstrated on the included video. The instruction book gives a beat-by-beat description of the movements of the feet, arms, hands, and body—all the information that is necessary to learn and to teach the dances independently. The music is also on two CDs for practice and performance purposes.
The book also contains cultural and historical background on the dances, seasonal themes, a musical score for each song with a singing translation of the lyrics, suggestions for teaching, a pronunciation guide to the Czech and Slovak languages, a glossary, and a bibliography.
